Montenegro residency by company formation: how it works and how it is renewed

A company can give you a temporary residence permit as its director. The conditions for keeping it matter as much as the application.

How residency by company formation works

You register a company, you become its director, and you apply for a temporary residence permit on that basis. In practice the director’s permit is a residence and work permit: it lets you work in your own company, which is why it is often searched as a Montenegro work permit. The company is not a formality: it has to run, pay a salary to the director and pay taxes.

  1. Register the company

We register the DOO and prepare the legal address. Remote registration is possible. See the registration timeline.

  2. Prepare the permit file

Passport, criminal record certificate, company and founding documents, a lease for at least one year, a medical examination, medical insurance, a nostrified education document and payment of state fees. See documents and apostille.

  3. Apply in person

For the Montenegro work permit and residence you attend for fingerprints, a photo and address registration. As a rule, the decision takes about 20 days. Family members’ permits are filed afterwards and, as a rule, take about 40 days.

What is checked at renewal

A director’s permit is renewed each year. The conditions to keep in mind:

  • Taxes and contributions of about €5,000 paid by the company over the previous year.
  • A director’s salary of at least €600 or €800 per month, depending on qualification, with taxes and contributions paid on it.
  • Monthly reporting filed on time. Missed filings are a direct risk to renewal.
  • An active company. A dormant company does not qualify.
  • Housing and insurance kept up to date: a lease of at least one year and valid medical insurance.
Costs of the director route. The registration price is not the full picture. See the cost of company formation for the monthly and yearly figures.

Family and permanent residence

After you receive your permit, your spouse and children can apply for residence under family reunification. After five years of continuous temporary residence, you can apply for permanent residence if the conditions have been met each year.

What we do and what we do not do

We do
  • Register the company and the legal address
  • Prepare and file the permit application
  • Keep the books so the conditions for renewal are met
We do not
  • Give attorney advice or represent you in court
  • Guarantee a decision: the authorities decide
  • Offer jobs or sponsor work contracts

Frequently asked questions

Can I work with a director’s residence permit?

Yes. You can work in your own company and sell your services to anyone.

How long is the permit valid?

A temporary residence permit for a company director is issued for one year and renewed each year while the conditions are met.

What if my company does not trade in the first year?

A dormant company does not pass renewal. The company needs activity and the taxes and contributions that go with it.
