Residence permit in Montenegro: choose your route
Montenegro residency, permits and renewal depend on the ground you choose. Compare the routes, and see what each one allows.
Compare the routes
A Montenegro residence permit can be issued on several grounds. Pick the one that matches your situation, and look at the conditions that decide whether it can be renewed.
| Route | Who it suits | Main condition | Term and renewal | Right to work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Company director How it works | Founders who run their own company in Montenegro | A registered, active company; director’s salary; about €5,000 in taxes and contributions per year for renewal | One year, renewed annually | Yes, in the own company and selling services to anyone |
| Employment Montenegro work permit | People hired by a Montenegrin employer | Employment contract; the employer files for the work permit | Tied to the employer; a new job means a new application | Yes, with that employer |
| Digital nomad | People who work remotely for a foreign employer or own foreign business | Income from abroad, accommodation, health insurance | Up to 2 years, one extension of 2 more years | Only for the foreign employer; not for Montenegrin clients |
| Family reunification | Spouses and children of residents | The relative’s valid residence permit | Follows the relative’s permit | Depends on the basis |
| Property Not our service | Owners of housing who do not plan to work in Montenegro | Property with a tax value of at least €150,000 and an ownership share of at least 51% (rules of 2026) | One year, renewed | No |
From temporary to permanent residence
After five years of continuous temporary residence, you can apply for permanent residence if the conditions have been met in every year. Gaps in your permit, or a company that stops paying its taxes, can break the chain, so renewals should be filed on time.
Where we help
We prepare and file the director’s residence permit and keep the company’s accounts so the conditions for renewal are met. For employment-based permits we prepare the documents, with the scope of work agreed in advance; the application is the employer’s. For digital nomad status and property, we explain the route; the application is yours. We are an accounting firm, not a law firm.

Does a company give me residence in Montenegro automatically?
No. A company gives you the right to apply for a temporary residence permit as its director. The application has its own requirements: accommodation, medical insurance, documents and a company that is actually active.
Can I keep digital nomad status and open a company?
Opening a company while holding a digital nomad permit implies a later application for a work permit, that is, a different residence basis. The digital nomad residence is then lost and all documents are filed again for the new basis.
When can I apply for permanent residence?
After five years of continuous temporary residence, if the conditions are met in every year of the period.
