Company registration in Montenegro: the real timeline

Registering a company has three stages: preparation, the registry decision and what follows. Only the second has a fixed limit.

Three clocks, not one

When people ask how long company registration in Montenegro takes (also searched as business registration or firm registration), they usually mean everything from the first message to a working company. These are three different stages with different durations.

1. Before filingTranslations and preparation of documents: translation, notarisation and, for a remote start, the digitised power of attorney. We do not promise a fixed number of days: it depends on your documents and the notary’s schedule.
2. RegistrationMontenegro company registration takes up to 5 working days from filing, counted from the day the application is submitted. At the end you receive the registration number and the PIB.
3. After registrationBank documents, the director’s residence permit and the bank account. As a rule: the permit decision takes about 20 days; the bank account 15–25 days (2–3 weeks).

What slows down setting up a company in Montenegro

  • An incomplete file or data that do not match between documents.
  • Documents that are not translated or certified in the required form. See documents and apostille.
  • A notary appointment that is not available at the time you need it.
  • Technical problems of state systems, which sometimes cause delays.

What you can do to speed it up

  • Send your passport and the planned company name at the start; Montenegro company registration can then be prepared in parallel with the rest.
  • If you start remotely, sign the power of attorney in English as soon as we send it.
  • Order the criminal record certificate early: it is needed for the residence permit, not for registration.
Remote or in person? Montenegro company formation can be done remotely with a power of attorney. The residence permit application cannot: it needs your presence in Montenegro. Read how the director’s permit works.

Frequently asked questions

Does “up to 5 working days” include preparing the documents?

No. Up to 5 working days is the time for the registry decision, counted from the moment the application is filed. The translations, the preparation of documents, the notary and the digitisation happen before filing.

What do I receive when the company is registered?

The registration decision, the company’s registration number and the PIB (tax ID). You can check the entry in the public Central Business Register.

Can the registry delay the decision?

The authorities decide, and they can ask for corrections if the file is incomplete or the data do not match. A complete, consistent file is the best way to avoid delay.
